About Onsen for All

Onsen for All is located in the Jedediah Higgins House, the oldest standing building in Franklin Township, NJ. According to legend, Jedediah Higgins purchased a large tract of several thousand acres around 1705, including the two acre property on which the house stands, from the Lenape Indians. The price paid was a sow and her eight piglets.

After years of neglect, the Jedediah Higgins House was purchased by Maple Town Associates, LLC in 2006. With support from the citizens of Franklin Township, the building has undergone more than three years of extensive renovation by skilled master craftsmen and artisans. Restoration efforts have painstakingly preserved the original charm and beauty of this historic structure, while enhancing it with subtle, tasteful, state-of-the art updating. The Jedediah Higgins House is listed on the National Historic Register.

The house's original 300 year-old New Jersey pine floors have been beautifully preserved, along with original ceiling beams and many other interesting features and details. Walking through the house gives the visitor an opportunity to experience the craftsmanship of Colonial workmen by observing, for example, the axe marks in the hand-hewn beams, the charming variety in floorboard width, and the preserved example of hand-crafted faux painting wall decoration that survived through the centuries.

The rich history of the house and the skillful work of past and present craftsmen help create a unique setting for the many wellness services offered by Onsen for All.

About the Instructors

Brian Critchley (Lead Instructor) has practiced yoga for 13 years and is a graduate of Princeton University, Inner Light Yoga Center, and Somerset School of Massage therapy (now Cortiva Institute). His yoga teaching style is most strongly influenced by teachers in the Anusara and Iyengar traditions and he has trained with Tarra Madore, Donna Amrita Davidge, and Genny Kapuler. During his teaching tenure he's developed and taught Onsen for All's Intro to Yoga Series along with workshops for the Center for Relaxation & Healing including Yoga for Pain Relief and Yoga for Back Pain. He is currently working with Elixir Fund to develop the Bridges to Wellness Program that will provide alternative therapies such as massage and yoga to cancer patients and their caregivers. Brian teaches alignment-based classes that are informed not just by his yoga training but by his study and practice of massage therapy. In June 2004 he completed the 600-hour Professional Track Program at SSMT as both the academic and practical valedictorian. As a massage practitioner, he has experience both with private clients and as a poolside therapist for the Rutgers University Swimming & Diving Team. In addition to his work as a yoga instructor and massage therapist, Brian is also the Co-Founding Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of New Jersey Namaste News, a yoga lifestyle magazine that serves the Central Jersey area. Brian is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher, NJ State certified massage therapist, and a member of ABMP (Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals).
